About this project

Local news is in crisis, as community newspapers across the country have been hollowed out by the loss of advertising and by devastating cuts imposed by corporate chain owners and hedge funds. What Works focuses on the path forward by examining innovative policy proposals and independent news projects that are showing signs of success. Our project comprises a podcast, events and updates on this website.

Our work is grounded in our book, “What Works in Community News: Media Startups, News Deserts, and the Future of the Fourth Estate,” co-authored by longtime Boston Globe journalist Ellen Clegg and School of Journalism Professor Dan Kennedy. It was published by Beacon Press in January 2024, and you can read all about it here.
